Dr. Paul Yock began his faculty career as an interventional cardiologist at UC San Francisco and then moved to Stanford in 1994. He served as Acting Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine from 1997-1998.

Dr. Yock is internationally known for his work in inventing, developing and testing new devices. He invented the Rapid Exchange™ balloon angioplasty system, which is now the dominant system in use worldwide. He developed a Doppler-guided hypodermic needle system, which is marketed under the names Smart Needle™ and P-D Access™.

The main focus of Dr. Yock's research program has been in the field of intravascular ultrasound. He developed the fundamental patents for intravascular ultrasound imaging and founded Cardiovascular Imaging Systems, now a division of Boston Scientific. He performed the first clinical cases using this technology and organized and published some of the key early studies.
